Take Action!

The Senate will be in session the week of November 17. During this lame-duck session of Congress, a second economic stimulus bill needs to be passed. In September, the House passed a stimulus bill, but the Senate failed to do so. Now, it is up to the Senate to help people in an ever-worsening economy.

Calls are needed immediately to all Senate offices through Wednesday, November 19. Urge your Senators to pass a stimulus bill that includes:
  • $200 million for relocation and temporary housing assistance for tenants who live in homes that are foreclosed upon, or that are in default with foreclosure imminent.
  • Protections for renters that require at least a 90-day notice before eviction and the right to remain in the property for the remainder of the lease, subject only to the right of the new owner to occupy the property.
  • $5 billion for public housing capital funds, $1 billion of which could be immediately dispersed through the capital fund's formula allocation, and the balance of which could be quickly committed after a competitive application process.
  • $110 million for Alabama disaster-related Community Development Block Grants.
  • Retraction of HUD's authority to waive income targeting requirements for all Katrina and Rita CDBG funds.
  • Congressional action to address the projected $3 - $4 billion gap in low income housing tax credit resources for 2008.
  • Also, urge your Senators to support funding for: Increased and extended unemployment insurance benefits; Increased food stamp and other food assistance program benefits; and, Temporary fiscal relief to states.
