AD 54 Candidate Forum: Special Election

On Thursday, April 23, SCANPH hosted a candidate debate forum for candidates running for California’s Assembly District 54. The forum attracted nearly 200 viewers with the opportunity for many more to watch the debate on the SCANPH YouTube channel. All five participating candidates engaged in spirited policy discussion on the topics of affordable housing and homelessness, issues which closely impact both Assembly District 54 and greater California.

The session was moderated by widely respected community leader, Jacquelyn Dupont Walker. Candidates were asked to respond to questions concerning their personal background in housing policy, their positions on housing legislation, and their knowledge of permanent sources of funding for affordable housing. Additionally, candidates responded to questions regarding Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) and the injunction imposed by Judge Carter. Read SCANPH’s overview of the judge’s injunction here.

SCANPH is proud to host candidate forums that create the space for conversations amongst current and future public officials. Our goal is to create a space where dialogue and learning can happen in the public sphere.

If you are interested in the topic of affordable housing, please consider joining SCANPH.

Our team would like to thank the Steering Committee members for working to generate engaging questions that contributed to the success of the forum. Steering Committee members include LA Voice, Venice Community Housing, KFA Architecture, Sutro Avenue Block Club South East Leimert Park, Social Justice Learning Institute, Culver City for More Homes, Westside Urban Forum, Coalition of Small Property Owners, and Empowerment Congress West Area Neighborhood Development Council.
