Senate District 30 Candidate Forum
As the pandemic leads to increased housing insecurity and homelessness, SCANPH recognizes the need to push legislators to fight to end homelessness and prioritize affordable housing for all. On Tuesday, February 23rd, SCANPH hosted a candidate forum to hear candidate statements on issues of affordable housing and homelessness. Through March 2nd, voters in Senate District 30 are voting in a special election to fill the seat recently vacated by Holly Mitchell, who is now a Los Angeles County Supervisor. The candidate forum featured: Renita Duncan, Sydney Kamlager and Daniel Lee, and was moderated by SCANPH board member and policy committee chair, Joss Tillard-Gates of Enterprise Community Partners.
Candidate discussion focused on legislative plans if elected to the California State Senate, giving speakers the chance to propose potential legislative ideas on issues of affordable housing. Focusing on the Los Angeles region, candidates weighed in on their plans to offer long term solutions to alleviate backlog in affordable housing production. Connecting the issue of housing justice to the fight for racial justice, speakers commented on interdisciplinary approaches to resolve the housing crisis, while maintaining a social justice lens. Concluding the session, moderator Joss Tillard-Gates requested that candidates provide final statements and comment on their willingness to meet with the SCANPH coalition within the first 100 days of tenure.
